Edvard Grieg

Grieg’s music won him international renown, making him the best known Norwegian composer of all time. For generations, his works have had a decisive influence on the perception of Norwegian music abroad.
Grieg’s earliest works reveal the influence of the German classical-romantic tradition, with which he became closely acquainted during his studies at the Leipzig Conservatory of Music. As the years went by, he developed his own highly personal style, characterised by sophisticated harmony combined with melodic and rhythmic features derived from Norwegian folk music. Certain impressionistic tendencies were already discernible in his works in the 1870s, and the progressive use of harmony in his last works heralded the stylistic innovations that emerged in European music after the turn of the century. The Grieg Society of Great Britain aims to shed special light on these aspects of his artistic development.
